On December 20
Ministry of Education and Science organizes a conference “National Research Programs: plans, achievements and future perspectives” at the Radisson Blue Hotel Daugava, Riga. Considering our institute’s active participation in National Research Programs starting from the first day of it’s existence, EDI representatives are attending the conference.
On December 17
A delegation of Ventspils University College (VUC) and its scientific institute “Ventspils International Radio astronomy Center” led by VUC’s rector Dr. Aigars Krauze visit Institute. The purpose is to introduce them with the institute and its activities, as well as discuss opportunities for future work in the fields of electronic engineering, computer sciences and information technologies.
On December 13
The director of EDI visits the State Education Development Agency to sign five contracts of European Regional Development Fund projects elaboration in institute from January 1st 2011, till December 31st 2013.
On December 7
EDI researchers are attending public discussion of National Research Program’s “Development of innovative multifunctional materials, signal processing and information technologies for competitive and knowledge intensive products” projects at the Institute of Solid State Physics’ Conference room, University of Latvia, Kengaraga str. 8, at 10:00.
On November 24
Students from Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) in Riga will be visiting EDI to learn about the EDI research directions and choose the course project topics for innovation and creativity project. The seminar will be held in lecture-room A at 9:00 AM.
On November 23-24
EDI researchers involved in project nr 2. “Innovative signal processing technologies for smart and effective creation of electronic systems” are attending workshop devoted to National Research Program’s projects at the Institute of Solid State Physics (SSP). EDI scientists are giving 4 talks and discussing with material scientists from SSP on common topics, including flexible material with pressure sensor abilities. Overall the program consists of 6 projects realized by EDI, University of Latvia, Riga Technical University and other institutions.

EDI researchers recently attended the international conference
Sensys-2010, which took place in ETH-Zurich, Switzerland on
01-05.11.2010. The researchers presented two posters about MansOS
operating system and a directional antenna for sensor networks.On October 20.
On October 20
In the Institute of Atom Physics and Spectroscopy (Šķūņu street 4, 1st floor; from 3 p.m. till 19 p.m.) two research groups will present their research directions and results: Smart Sensors and Networked Embedded Systems research group (VieSenTIS, EDI) and Biophotonics research group (ASI).

On September 7-10
Signal processing laboratory assistant researcher Gatis Supols from 7th to 10th September participates in the 7th IEEE International Conference on Signals and Electronic Systems (ICSES 2010), held in the Gliwice, Poland. This conference, which has been organized in Poland since 2000 is the most important scientific event in the field of electronic signals and systems in Poland and is organized every second year alternately with the European conference ECCTD. During the conference the paper “Analytic Model and Bilateral Approximation for Clocked Comparator” written together with Modris Greitans and Evalds Hermanis will be presented.
On August 23-27
Signal processing laboratory senior researcher Modris Greitans and researcher Rolands Shavelis from 23rd to 27th August participated in the European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO-2010) organised by the European Association for Signal Processing. The event is Europe’s most prestigious conference in this area and was held in the Aalborg Congress and Culture Centre in the city of Aalborg, Denmark. During the poster session the poster corresponding to the publication “Reconstruction of sequences of arbitrary-shaped pulses from its low-pass or band-pass approximations using spectrum extrapolation” was presented.
On July 15
On July 15, 2010 the Ministry of Education and Science has approved the application of the EDI project “Support of EDI international cooperation projects in science and technology”. Implementation time will be 2011 – 2013. The implementation of the project will promote the formation of the new contacts, will foster the preparation of the international cooperation projects and will support the participation of EDI staff in significant international scientific events.
On July 7- 9
Signal processing laboratory researcher Artis Mednis from 7th to 9th July participated in the conference “Networked Digital Technologies” (NDT 2010), held in Prague, Czech Republic, where during session “Intelligent agent-based systems, cognitive and reactive AI systems” presented publication “RoadMic: Road Surface Monitoring Using Vehicular Sensor Networks with Microphones”, written together with Girts Strazdins, Martins Liepins, Andris Gordjusins and Leo Selavo within ESF project VieSenTIS (2009/0219/1DP/1.1.1.2.0/09/APIA/VIAA/020).

Based on the decision No.283 dated 31 May 1960 of the Latvian SSR Council of Ministers, Institute of Electronics and Computer Science was founded in 1960 as a part of the Latvian Academy of Science.
50 years have passed and EDI greets all of his former and current employees, and invites to EDI jubilee celebrations on 1st of July in 2010 in Riga, Dzerbenes Street 14!
On June 18
EDI hosts Jekabpils Agrobusiness College students to introduce them with the institute and its activities, as well as opportunities for future work in IT.
On June 16
RTU second year bachelor students from Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications visit EDI to get acquainted with the work of the laboratories and the themes of the bachelor thesis, which are proposed by employees to develop at the Institute.
On June 5-11
From June 5 to 11 within the framework of the OSMOSE project EDI is visited by scientists Laurent Fesquet and Taha Beyrouthy from Tima Laboratory (France). The project aims to combine the efforts of Latvian and French scientists to create miniature and efficient data acquisition and processing systems, which are based on event-driven, signal-dependent approach, and are built in specialized asynchronous integrated circuits.
On May 18-20
The 14th International Conference of ELECTRONICS 2010 is taking place in Kaunas and Vilnius on May 18, 19, 20. Researchers of EDI V.Petersons, G.Supols, A.Severdaks, U.Grunde, A.Skageris, I. Mednieks, J. Sinica-Sinavskis are participating with their presentations in the plenary session as well as in the sections of signal technologies and high frequency technologies.
On May 11
The director of EDI Modris Greitans visits RTU Faculty of Electronics and telecommunications in order to inform bachelor’s students about the current activities and achievements of the institute, as well as to propose EDI as a place, where to develop bachelor’s thesis.

During the planned visit of IBM representatives to Riga, a meeting with representatives of Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) and IBM will be held at Institute at 11:45 – Director of IBM Technology and Intellectual Property Development of Eastern Europe and Israel Spiros Teleogleou, IBM Latvia Executive Director Ugis Erins, LIAA Deputy Director Maris Elerts and LIAA Export Promotion Division Senior Project Manager Evija Pudane.
Objective of the visit is to present a possible model for cooperation and trends of common research projects.

On March 24
The Annual General Meeting of the Members of the Latvian Electrical Engineering and Electronics Industry Association (LEtERA) takes place at the headquarter of SIA Lattelecom in Riga on 24th March 2010. LEtERA is an independent, voluntary and non-governmental public organization founded in 1995. LEtERA unites companies, research and educational institutions registered and operating in Latvia, whose activities are related to Industry of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Information and Communications Technology. At the meeting, the director of EDI Dr. Modris Greitāns presents brief overview about activities and achievements of the Institute in the previous year, as well as ideas of possible joint actions in future.
On March 22
The lead researcher Jurijs Artjuhs participates in European Space Agency (ESA) audit with presentation on “HIGH-PERFOMANCE EVENT TIMERS FOR SATELLITE LASER RANGING”, which takes place in the Ministry of Education and Science.
On March 9
Five project applications for an open selection of sent in projects in ERDF activity No. 2.1.1.1. “Support to science and research” is submitted in Ministry of Education and Science. The implementation of four projects is planned to be carried out in EDI, while the fifth project – in Institute for Environmental Solutions with EDI participating as a cooperation partner:

“Multimodal biometric technology for secure and convenient authentication of persons”;

“Experimental development of multifunctional signal time analyser”;

“High sensitivity ultrawideband radar technology”;

“Point technology of multifunctional intelligent transportation system”;

“Application of remote-sensing technology in identification of floodings caused by beavers and the assessment of impact on forest stand (the project applicant – Institute for Environmental Solutions).

The professor of Riga Technical University Elmars Bekeris visits EDI to lead the lecture and discussion on the topic “Random fluctuations and their applications in radioelectronics” at 15:00 in room B207 (an average duration of 1.5 hours).
