Scientific assistant Rihards Novickis on 5-6 december attended “Design and Reuse” conference and exhibitionabout silicon IP amd industries current tendencies. During conference Rihards met with representatives from such companies as ARM, Intel, Synopsis, STMicroelectronics, Cadence, TSMC, CSEM etc.

Signal processing laboratory senior researchers Modris Greitans and Kaspars Ozols as well as Cyber-physical system laboratory researchers Aleksandrs Levinskis and Krisjanis Nesenbergs and scientific assistant Janis Judvaitis are participating in international conference and partner meeting event “ICT 2018: Imagine Digital – Connect Europe” in Vienna, Austria. During the event, ICT tendencies (such as AI, DIH, HPC, 5G, Cyber security) and main achievements in the EU projects together with upcoming H2020 calls are presented. EDI is also taking part in the Face2Face networking event, presenting its recent scientific achievements and results with an aim to find new international cooperation partners and submit new project proposals in the Horizon 2020 program.

Signal processing laboratory senior researcher Kaspars Ozols and scientific assistant Janis Arents are participating in “Digital Innovation Hubs Annual Event” in Warsaw, Poland. During the event, EDI is attending conference sessions, networking events and discussions related to Digital Innovation Hubs and robotics. In addition, EDI is presenting it main scientific challenges in the field, assess the information of upcoming H2020 calls and discuss new project ideas.

Signal processing laboratory senior researchers Modris Greitans and Kaspars Ozols as well as scientific assistant Rihards Novickis are participating in “Workshop on Dual-Use Technologies for Autonomous Land Vehicles” and “European Forum for Electronic Components and Systems (EFECS) 2018” events. During the event, ICT tendencies and main achievements in the EU projects together with upcoming H2020, ECSEL, EUREKA and other calls are presented. EDI is also taking part in theFace2Face networking event, presenting its recent scientific achievements and results. In addition, EDI is presenting project idea poster EVISION: Embedded Vision Systems for Autonomy and Safety.

During the meeting, different Building Blocks of the project are discussed in details.

Signal processing laboratory senior researchers Kaspars Ozols and scientific assistant Rihards Novickis are participating in “Programmable Systems for Intelligence in Automobiles” (PRYSTINE) project F2F meeting in Vienna, Austria. During the meeting, EDI presents its latest updates in the development of self-driving car, discusses potential requirements, specification and overall system’s architecture. EDI researchers Aleksandrs Levinskis and Roberts Kadiķis have been participating in GTC Europe 2018 conference which is held in Munich, Germany. During the conference EDI achievements have been popularized , especially in self-driving cars sector and machine vision. During autonomous vehicles workshop EDI involvement in GCDC competition was presented. Besides that, there was active discussions regarding H2020 project proposal writing together with potential partners.

Signal processing laboratory electronic engineer Vitalijs Fescenko is participating in ” Baltic Electronics Conference 2018″ conference in Tallinn, Estonia. During the conference scientific paper “Performance of Adaptive Filters for Predicting the Future Values of the Vehicle Sideslip Angle” developed in EDI as part of 3Ccar project activities is presented.

Signal processing laboratory senior researchers Kaspars Ozols and scientific assistant Rihards Novickis are participating in “Integrated Components for Complexity Control in Affordable Electrified Cars (3Ccar)” project final review meeting in Graz, Austria. Signal processing laboratory senior researcher/EDI scientific director Modris Greitans is participating H2020 project “Trustworthy and Smart Actuation in IoT systems —ENACT” partners meeting in Barcelona, Spain. During the event, M.Greitans will present the Institute’s progress in the implementation of the project, discuss the results and problems, as well as plan further stages of the project implementation.

In the scope of Project nr. 1.2.1.1/16/A/002 (DIPA), Discrete signal processing laboratory researcher Ričards Cacurs and scientific assitant Jānis Ārents participate in Robot Operating System (ROS) conference – ROSCon2018 in Madrid, Spain. Conference sessions include topics about ROS 2 development and various applications where ROS is used. During networking event, project DIPA is introduced and new contacts are being made for future cooperation.
On September 24-28th
Romans Maliks and Rudolfs Cirulis, as a scientific assistants of signal processing laboratory have attended “Introduction to Analogue and Mixed Signal IC Design” training courses within co-financed ERDF project “Ultra platjoslas impulsu radara sensors (UPIRS)” (Project Nr. KC-PI-2017/26). Connections with other course attenders have been established during the training course for further communication between to solve project related questions during IC design. At the end of the courses certificates and course material were received.

Researcher of the Discrete Signaling Laboratory Gatis Šūpols and business consultant Vents Riekstiņš visited the European Microwave Exhibition that happened within the framework of the 21st European Microwave Week 2018 . This exhibition is the largest trade show dedicated to Microwave and Radio Frequency (RF) technology in Europe, providing:
* 10,000 sqm of gross exhibition space
* Around 4,500 key visitors from around the globe
* 1,500 – 1,700 conference delegates
* In excess of 300 international exhibitors (including Asia and US as well as Europe)
During the exhibition, new contacts were established with industry experts and microwave technology developers. The presentation of the advantages of the ultra-wideband pulse radar sensor technology developed in the ERDF co-financed project “Ultra-wideband Pulse Radar Sensor (UPIRS)” (Project No. KC-PI-2017/26) and its advantages over existing market solutions has been presented. There were also discussions on current scientific and technical issues.

Three representatives from Huawei Helsinki Research Center are visiting EDI to discuss collaboration possibilities with EDI. During the meeting, EDI presents its main research directions as well as future vision and strategy. During the tour in EDI laboratories, our guests are introduced with research and development activities by showing several demonstrations. During the tour, several collaboration possibilities are discussed.

Scientific director, senior researcher Modris Greitans together with Signal processing laboratory senior researcher Kaspars Ozols and Cyber Physical Systems laboratory researcher Aleksandrs Levinskis have been participating in “5GTechritory” conference, which is held in Riga. During the conference EDI achievements have been popularized, especially in ICT sector. Besides that there was mentioned about EDI involvement in HORIZON2020 AUTODRIVE project, it outcomes and how it can affect future mobility.

EDI hosts partner meeting for international project “Frictionless Energy Efficient Convergent Wearables For Healthcare and Lifestyle Applications (CONVERGENCE)” https://convergence-era.org/, where project progress is discussed. Employees of EDI are presenting achieved results in physical activity sensor system development. Institute is represented by: Modris Greitans, Ricards Cacurs, Juris Ormanis, Artis Rozentāls and Kaspars Ozols.

Within the framework of the JETRO visit of Japan’s Foreign Trade Promotion Organization organized by the Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIAA), a delegation of Japanese businessmen is visiting the Institute. Within the framework of the event, guests will be introduced to the research carried out by the Institute and discuss future cooperation opportunities.

Signal processing laboratory senior researcher Kaspars Ozols and scientific assistant Niklavs Barkovskis are participating in “Intelligent Motion Control Platform for Smart Mechatronic Systems” (I-MECH) project review meeting in Brussels, Belgium. During the meeting, project achievements in the 1st year of the project in presented to European Commission as well as planned future activities are discussed. Scientific director, senior researcher Modris Greitans with a report “Development and Applications of Smart Embedded Cooperative Systems” is participating in The 4th World Congress of Latvian Scientists in Engineering and Technology Section.
An event of major significance for science in Latvia – the 4th World Congress of Latvian Scientists – will take place in 2018 when Latvia celebrates its Centenary.

Signal processing laboratory leading researcher Modris Greitans and researcher Kaspars Ozols are participating in the “Baltic C-ITS Forum” in Riga, Latvia. The aim of the forum is to foster C-ITS development in the Baltic States & Nordic region by bringing together most prominent industry professionals, policy makers and researchers to unlock opportunities that C-ITS provides for all of us. C-ITS presents a great opportunity for various stakeholders to build a safer, more controlled and economically viable environment for mutually aligned mobility solutions.

Sr. consultant on automated driving Mr. Sevn Jansen from TNO is giving presentation about TNO research activities in the field of automated and cooperative driving. In addition, AUTOPILIT project ( http://autopilot-project.eu) is presented and scientific ideas exchanged. After the presentation, a guided tour around EDI is organized and potential future collaborations discussed.

On the occasion of State Visit to Latvia by His Majesty, King Willem-Alexander, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the free port of Riga in close collaboration with the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) and Connekt organized seminar “Get connected! Seminar on smart mobility and sustainable logistics”, which was attended by EDI leading researcher Modris Greitans, researcher Kaspars Ozols and scientific assistants Ingars Ribners and Aleksandrs Levinskis.
During the seminar, several enabling technologies for automated and cooperative driving were demonstrated to His Majesty, King Willem-Alexander and other seminar guests by EDI and TNO. Special emphasis was put on successful research collaboration between Latvia and the Netherlands in the field of smart mobility. In addition, 3Ccar, Autodrive and Prystine projects where disseminated.

Signal processing laboratory senior researcher/EDI scientific director Modris Greitans is participating H2020 project “Trustworthy and Smart Actuation in IoT systems —ENACT” partners meeting in Madrid, Spain. During the event, a deliverable related to the definition of requirements for the demonstrations of the use cases of emerging IoT solutions to be developed in the project is discussed. The Institute is involved in demonstrating the use case of intelligent transport systems.
On April 6th
Signal processing laboratory researcher Kaspars Ozols together with Ingmars Pukis and Arturs Lindenbergs from LMT are participating in the f2f meeting in Helsinki, Finland to meet with Finnish Transport Safety Agency, Vediafi, Dynniq Finland and VTT. The aim is to discuss about current development and possibilities for cooperation alongside cross-border corridors to develop digital transport services.
